This chapter discusses the opera No for an Answer and its long genesis, during which the composer became close friends with David Diamond and Mina Curtiss, the sister of impresario Lincoln Kirstein. Deemed one of Blitzstein’s best works by Aaron Copland, the opera received a few performances in early 1941 (occasioning Carol Channing’s Broadway debut), but world developments decided Blitzstein against pursuing a Broadway run. The work has only occasionally been revived, including a recent production in San Francisco by A.C.T. (American Conservatory Theater).
