The first chapter explores the context of the Chikhachevs’ world as background to the story of Natalia and Andrei. Vladimir province lies on the famed “Golden Ring” in the heartland of European Russia, with cities that were once medieval capitals. The region is seen as it was in the middle nineteenth-century: its industry and agriculture, its towns and climate. This chapter looks in detail at the villages where the Chikhachevs lived, and the unique documents they left behind (including a “notebook correspondence” and “parallel diaries”).
