This introductory chapter first sets out the purpose of the book, which is to expand our understanding of emerging adults (eighteen- to twenty-three-year-old Americans), as a means to help reflect on growing up in the United States today, on life in our society, and on American culture more generally. It discusses the concept of sociological imagination and American adults’s attitudes towards young people. It then explains what “emerging adulthood” is all about.
