This chapter draws together the preceding discussion in an evaluation of the historical and contemporary claims made for the effects of music education, and speculates about how the impact of current teaching and learning might differ from the experiences of earlier generations. The chapter debates whether lifelong interest and involvement is a valid aim for music education, and considers whether this could (or should) be more deliberately fostered through classroom and community projects. The balance between skills, knowledge and attitudes in music education is considered in the light of recent philosophical writing and pedagogical advice.
