Christ Passages in Paul

Show Summary Details

This chapter treats nine passages in which Paul comments at the discourse level on how he means the word “Christ.” These passages are: Gal 3:16 (“Abraham’s seed, which is Christ”); 1 Cor 15:20-28 (“When he hands over the kingdom to God”); 2 Cor 1:21-22 (“Anointed into the anointed one”); Rom 9:1-5 (“From the Israelites comes the Christ”); Rom 15:3, 9 (“Your reproaches fell on me… I will praise your name”); Rom 15:7-12 (“The root of Jesse who rises to rule the Gentiles”); 1 Cor 1:23 (“We preach a crucified Christ”); 2 Cor 5:16-17 (“We no longer know Christ according to the flesh”); and Rom 1:3-4 (“From the seed of David according to the flesh”). In none of these passages does Paul repudiate the conventional sense of “Christ,” and in every case he meets the pertinent criteria for early Jewish messiah texts, in particular discourse about a “messiah” using the linguistic resources of the Jewish scriptures.
