This chapter presents ethnography as a helpful way to acquire understanding of the culture and cultural knowledge of people outside one’s own cultural context, either a “foreign” culture or a subgroup within one’s own culture. Ethnography is understood as a theoretically driven, systematic approach to the study of a social group’s everyday life that allows the researcher to understand and see the sociocultural world of a social group from the members’ own perspectives. The chapter concludes with describing the characteristics of research when ethnography is used as a meta-framework for culturally competent research. The meta-framework allows the researcher to explore, define, and refine questions and adjust the study design and research techniques to be inclusive of a diverse range of research methodologies including both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
