Feminist radical empiricists (e.g., Elizabeth Anderson, Sharyn Clough, Lynn Hankinson Nelson, and Richmond Campbell) extend Quine's idea of a “web of belief” to include both beliefs and values. This article cautions that such holism does not have the resources to distinguish relevant from irrelevant values, and this distinction is needed to make sense of many epistemic practices. Feminist radical empiricism may work for some special cases of value-imbued science, but does not provide a general framework for understanding the ways in which values work in science.
