An examination of the ayurvedic physician's code of ethics as part of the initiation process and its meaning for medical practice and the physician's status in society follows. The chapter also discusses the position of ayurvedic ethics within a wider South Asian context, drawing comparisons with rules and moral concepts from Buddhist and brahmanical (i.e., orthodox Hindu) literature.
