This chapter sets out the purpose of the book, which is to explicate an integrated theory that explains how stability and change are achieved by social actors in circumscribed social arenas. In constructing this perspective it draws upon the rich body of integrative scholarship produced in recent years by economic sociologists, institutional theorists in both sociology and political science, and social movement scholars. The chapter then identifies and briefly describes the key components of the theory. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
