While David Arnold was again signed to write the score for the first 007 film of the 21st century, the lack of success for his title song on the previous film led MGM management to seek a big-name artist for the new one. They signed Madonna, who in turn enlisted her producer-partner Mirwais and French arranger-conductor Michel Colombier to orchestrate and conduct the live elements of the tune. Techno/electronica in style, it divided Bond fans but became a major chart success, reaching no. 8 in the U.S. and no. 3 in the U.K. Madonna also made a cameo appearance in the film as a fencing instructor and made an edgy video that took off on the film's early torture scenes.
