The introductory chapter gives a short survey of the various attitudes towards metaphysics in the twentieth century and describes the return of metaphysics to the analytic tradition in the second half of the century. The philosophers who contributed to the return are introduced and linked with the long tradition of metaphysics starting from ancient philosophy. The very concepts of metaphysics and ontology are clarified and the main figures and trends in contemporary metaphysics are mentioned and characterized in the introduction. The introduction serves to give the basic motivation for the volume, which is to consider metaphysics as category theory and to connect metaphysical problems with problems we find in the history of logic. It also contains short abstracts of the individual chapters of the volume.
