As Homo sapiens we are part of an evolving universe. We belong to an Earthly and cosmic history. This chapter organizes the kind of creature we are—creatures of symbolic consciousness—around three themes: born to belonging, born to meaning and religion, born to morality. As moral, believing animals who live their lives across an is/ought/how gap, religious ethics proceeds from awareness of our nature and our planet’s nature as living expressions of deep time.

Keywords: born to belonging; born to religion; born to morality; symbolic consciousness; primal elements; the ecosphere; the zoo in you
