Humans are bio-social and eco-social creatures by birth. But morality as learning to live together well is not innate. There is no “app” for good moral judgment. Communities of various kinds are the matrix of moral formation. This matrix includes large systems and structures as well as intimate circles of family and neighbors. Both the built and the unbuilt environment shape our morality. This chapter describes and assesses the community matrix of an industrial-technological way of life and shows what kind of communities and moral formation are needed for ecological living. Examples are offered.
