The communities of moral formation needed for the hard transition to ecological civilization require laboratories of learning. When these are Earth-honoring, they are “anticipatory communities” that show the way. This chapter uses the shared religious theme of discipleship as the schools for learning “the Way” in a set of focal practices. Discipleship thus introduces Part II of the book by suggesting how the resources of religious traditions can serve anticipatory communities and be brought to bear on the adaptive challenges we all face.

Keywords: discipleship as moral formation; the way of discipleship; the calling of discipleship; the practices of discipleship; anticipatory communities; the pattern of renewal
