The revised edition of Peter Williams's magisterial study The Organ Music of J. S. Bach serves as a point of departure for a survey of recent research on Bach's organ works. Various books, articles, and editions are given critical consideration. Of special interest is the discovery of a fugue by Bach's pupil J. G. Schübler. Subtitled “Lass mich gehn, denn dort kommt meine Mutter her” (“Let me go, because here comes my mother”) and based on Bach's “Little” Fugue in G Minor, Schübler's work implies that the subject of Bach's fugue is taken from a folk song.
