In chapter 6, Tim Winter argues that Islamic monotheism is inherently at odds with the paradigm of religious pluralism as conventionally understood. According to the Islamic ethos, there can only be one God and one true reality. Mainstream Christian teachings about Jesus, for instance, simply cannot be reconciled with what we find in Islamic scripture. Yet, again, the rejection of religious pluralism should not be conflated with the promotion of soteriological exclusivism, the notion that all non-Muslims are condemned to the Fire: according to the Qur’an and hadith corpus, the God of mercy may save righteous monotheists of other traditions, most notably through prophetic intercession.
