Biomass historically was the main source of energy until the beginning the twentieth century, when fossil fuels began to ascend. Biomass still remains the primary energy source for most of the world’s poor; it is not a transition energy source but is increasingly used in both rich and poor countries in household (ranging from three-stone cooking stoves to small ovens and boilers) and industrial applications for heat, electricity, and/or transport fuels.
