The modern sport of gymnastics emerged in the 1950s, although its roots lie in the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, India, and China. Gymnastics was later transformed into a form of exercise and military training in northern Europe. In its modern form, gymnastics is a competitive sport for men and women based on performing exercises on apparatus. Women’s gymnastics is an especially popular Olympic sport.
