Multiculturalism refers to the degree of cultural homogeneity versus diversity in a society or institution. In the context of sports, globalization, the movement of peoples from one nation to another, and the spread of professional sports has made ethnic diversity and the place of ethnic sports within the world of sports significant issues. Nations and sports organizations have tried to deal with these issues by looking to create plural societies, or by either assimilating or isolating the ethnic minorities.
