Pentathlon, Modern

Show Summary Details

The modern pentathlon is a niche sport that was developed for the 1912 Olympics to showcase military skills. The sport combines five skills that a Napoleonic-era military courier or spy might have needed: horseback riding, shooting, swimming, running, and fencing. Its popularity has been mainly in Europe, and especially in Eastern Europe. For various reasons it has never become a major sport and faces removal from the Olympic program.
