A term that may be used to describe any grouping of electronic devices for the purposes of sound synthesis. It is more usual, however, to reserve this label for complete systems of an integral construction, purpose-built by a single manufacturer. The early electronic music studios of the 1950s were assembled from different items of equipment, in many instances originally designed for quite different applications such as laboratory testing. Each of these devices had to be adjusted by hand, placing a considerable onus on the practical skills of the composer....
