The revolution set in motion by Copernicus was followed by huge advances in observing the planets and the stars. ‘Astronomy Transformed’ highlights the key thinkers and observers in this period. Tycho Brahe was the first modern observer, though he did not use a telescope, which was pioneered by among others, Galileo, who built on Copernicus' ideas to argue for a heliocentric view of the solar system. Brahe's successor, Johannes Kepler, a mathematician and astronomer developed his planetary laws and explained the motion of the planets in terms of elliptical orbits around the Sun.
