‘Who are the leaders?’ considers the characteristics of leaders. What do they look like? How do they act? There is a lack of diversity amongst world and business leaders; in business, the majority are tall handsome white alpha-males of privilege (THWαMPs). Can gender imbalance be resolved using legislation or using competency models? Social identity theory suggests we tend to place other people in categories that are either favourable, because they support our own identity, or unfavourable, because they are deemed to be different from us. This process generates prototypes that emulate the social identity of the group and depersonalize its members. The rational and emotional aspects of leadership are also discussed.
