Show Summary Details

colonial governor of New York, was the son of Sir Francis Clinton, the sixth earl of Lincoln, and Susan Penniston. His place of birth is not known. Born into a noble family as a second son, George Clinton had all the advantages of that status. As his older brother, the seventh earl of Lincoln, had male issue, Clinton had to pursue a career and joined the Royal Navy during 1707. His naval career illustrates the British patronage system at its worst. The Lincoln family had marital ties with the powerful officeholder Thomas Pelham-Holles, the duke of Newcastle, and Clinton used Newcastle’s influence to acquire naval rank.
