Wheelock, Eleazar (22 April 1711–24 April 1779), Congregational minister and educator, was born in Windham, Connecticut, the son of Ralph Wheelock and Ruth Huntington, farmers of old New England ancestry. Wheelock entered Yale in 1729, developed a reputation for both piety and scholarship, and graduated in 1733 having been awarded a prize for distinction in classics. After additional study at Yale he became, in 1735, pastor of the Second Congregational Church at Lebanon Crank (Columbia), Connecticut. He remained the pastor for thirty-five years even though relationships with his parishioners were often strained. Wheelock also managed a large personal estate of land acquired through inheritance, marriage, church settlement, and purchase....
