Anglican activist for the American colonies, was born at Marton in Shropshire, England. Information about his parents and his childhood experiences is unavailable. After early education at Oswestry School, Bray attended Oxford University, earning a bachelor of arts degree at All Souls College in 1678 and a master of arts at Hart Hall in 1693. After being ordained as a priest in the Church of England he served for several years as a curate in Bridgnorth and then as chaplain to the family of Sir Thomas Price at Park Hill in Warwickshire.
