Mitchell, Robert Byington (04 April 1823–26 January 1882), politician and Civil War general, was born in Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio. The names of his parents are not known. Claims made in several historical studies that Mitchell attended Kenyon College in Ohio or Washington College in Pennsylvania cannot be confirmed by school records; all that is known for certain of this period in his life is that in the early 1840s he moved to Mount Vernon in Knox County, Ohio, and studied law under John K. Miller. In 1844 he was admitted to the bar and returned to Mansfield, where he established a practice....
