Walt, Lewis William (16 February 1913–26 March 1989), Marine Corps general, was born on a farm near Harveyville, Kansas. Walt’s parents died when he was sixteen. In 1936 he received a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in chemistry from Colorado State University, where he was a star football player. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps on 1 July 1936. In August 1937 he embarked for China, where he served as a platoon leader in Shanghai, guarding the international settlement there after Japan invaded northern China....
