pastor and educator, was born in Frankfort, Maine, the son of Reuben Curtis, a minister, and Mary Gilbert. During his youth Curtis’s family moved from Maine to Wisconsin, and as a young man he worked in business in Chicago, Illinois. Deeply influenced by the preaching of evangelist Dwight L. Moody, Curtis decided to prepare for the ministry. He graduated from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, in 1877 and three years later received his B.D. from Boston University School of Theology. While in Boston the preaching of Episcopal rector Phillips Brooks and the lectures of reformer Wendell Phillips had a substantial influence on his theological and social views.
