Ireland, John (11 September 1838–25 September 1918), first Roman Catholic archbishop of St. Paul, Minnesota, was born in Burnchurch, County Kilkenny, Ireland, the son of Richard Ireland, a carpenter, and Judith Naughton. At the age of eleven he emigrated with his family first to Burlington, Vermont, then to Chicago, and finally, in 1852, to St. Paul, Minnesota Territory.
