theologian, was born in Denver, Colorado, the son of Wayne Cullen Williams, a lawyer and judge, and Lena Belle Day. After graduating from the University of Denver (A.B., 1931), he earned degrees at the University of Chicago (M.A., 1933), Chicago Theological Seminary (B.D., 1934), and Columbia University (Ph.D., 1940). His doctoral dissertation was published the following year as The Andover Liberals: A Study in American Theology.
