Mentschikoff, Soia (02 April 1915–18 June 1984), lawyer, co-drafter of the Uniform Commercial Code, law professor, and dean, was born in Moscow, Russia, the daughter of Roman Sergei Mentschikoff and Eugenia Ossipov. Fleeing the 1917 Russian revolution, Mentschikoff’s father, an American citizen, took his family to New York City, where he worked as a typewriter salesman and her mother took in fine sewing. Mentschikoff attended the New York public schools and Hunter College, receiving her A.B. in 1934. She then enrolled in Columbia Law School in a class that was 7 percent women.
