Carothers, Wallace Hume (27 April 1896–29 April 1937), chemist, was born in Burlington, Iowa, to Ira Hume Carothers, an educator, and Mary Evalina McMullin. The family moved to Des Moines, Iowa, when he was five so that his father could accept a teaching position at Capital City Commercial College. In 1914 Wallace enrolled at Capital City to study accounting, and in 1915 he matriculated at Tarkio (Missouri) College, where he studied chemistry and physics and taught accounting. After receiving his B.S. degree from Tarkio in 1920, he enrolled in the University of Illinois, receiving his M.S. in 1921 and his Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 1924....
