Young, Charles Augustus (15 December 1834–03 January 1908), astronomer, was born in Hanover, New Hampshire, the son of Ira Young, professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Dartmouth College, and Eliza Minot Adams. Young helped his father in scientific projects from a young age and entered Dartmouth at the age of fourteen. After receiving a B.A. in 1853, he spent a summer in Europe with his father, who had become professor of natural philosophy and astronomy and was planning the new Shattuck astronomical observatory at Dartmouth. The purpose of the trip was to visit foreign observatories and to obtain equipment....
