historian, was born in New York City, the son of Jacob Morris, a supervisor in the garment industry, and Tillie Rosenberg. As a high school student at Townsend Harris Hall, Morris developed a strong interest in history. Encouraged by his teachers, the fifteen-year-old Morris in 1920 published an article in the American Hebrew and Jewish Messenger, “Alexander Hamilton as a Hebraist,” which noted the Old Testament foundations of early American law—foreshadowing his scholarly career.
