Zahniser, Howard Clinton (25 February 1906–05 May 1964), editor and conservationist, was born in Franklin, Pennsylvania, the son of Archibald Howard McElrath Zahniser, a clergyman, and Bertha Belle Newton. Zahniser worked on several newspapers while attending Greenville College in Illinois. He completed his bachelor’s degree in 1928 and briefly taught high school English before joining the Department of Commerce as an editorial assistant in 1930. While in Washington, D.C., Zahniser also attended graduate school at American University and George Washington University....
