Holley, Marietta (16 July 1836–01 March 1926), writer, was born in Jefferson County, New York, near the villages of Adams and Pierrepont Manor, the daughter of John Milton Holley and Mary Taber, farmers. Her education in the rural district school ended when she was fourteen, but thereafter she read and studied informally. When her brothers left the farm to seek their fortunes in the West after their father’s death in the 1860s, Holley supported the family by selling handicrafts and giving music lessons....
