Peterkin, Julia Mood (31 October 1880–10 August 1961), writer, was born in Laurens County, South Carolina, the daughter of Julius Andrew Mood, a physician, and Alma Kennedy Archer. Because her mother died in 1883 when she was less than three years old, Julia was raised by her grandfather, Henry Mood, a Methodist minister, and her grandmother, Catherine Mood. She graduated from Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1896 and stayed on to earn a master’s degree. In 1903 she married William George Peterkin and moved to “Lang Syne,” his cotton plantation near Fort Motte, South Carolina. The couple had one child....
