MacDonald, John D. (24 July 1916–28 December 1988), suspense and mystery writer and novelist, was born John Dann MacDonald in Sharon, Pennsylvania, the son of Eugene Andrew MacDonald, a business executive, and Marguerite Grace Dann. MacDonald was educated in Utica, New York, at the Utica Free Academy. He entered the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Finance in 1934, but transferred in 1936 to the Syracuse University School of Business Administration, receiving a B.S. there in the spring of 1938. In July he married Dorothy Prentiss, an artist and fellow Syracuse graduate; they were to have one son. That fall he enrolled in the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, where he earned an M.B.S. in 1939....
