Gaddis, William (29 December 1922–16 December 1998), novelist, was born in New York City, the son of William Gaddis and Edith Charles Gaddis. Gaddis grew up in Massapequa, Long Island, and his early life was disrupted by his parents' divorce when he was three. His mother gained custody of Gaddis, an only child, and to support the family she began work as a secretary at the New York Steam Corporation. But she was unable to care for Gaddis, and he was sent to a Connecticut boarding school, where he stayed until he was thirteen....
