Dickey, James (02 February 1923–19 January 1997), writer, was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the son of Eugene Dickey, a lawyer, and Maibelle Swift Dickey. Because Maibelle Swift had inherited a small fortune from her father's tonic company, Swift's Southern Specific, Eugene rarely practiced the law. Instead, he indulged his passion for cockfighting, raising prize-winning roosters on a farm on the outskirts of Atlanta. While Eugene had little patience for the niceties of Atlanta's aristocratic society (his people hailed from the North Georgia mountains), Maibelle was more of a city girl.
