Hoban, James (1758?–08 December 1831), architect, was born in County Kilkenny, Ireland, the son of Edward Hoban and Martha Bayne. He studied architecture with Thomas Ivory in Dublin, winning a medal in 1780 from the Dublin Society for “Drawings of Brackets, Stairs, Roofs, etc.” The date of his emigration to America is unknown, but on 25 May 1785 he advertised his services as an architect in the ...
