Leslie, Charles Robert (19 October 1794–05 May 1859), artist and author, was born in London, England, the son of Robert Leslie, a Philadelphia clock and watch store owner, and Lydia Baker; one of his sisters was the author Eliza Leslie. Leslie’s father, who was also a draftsman, musician, and member of the American Philosophical Society, had taken his family to London on an extended business trip. The family returned to Philadelphia in 1800 after a traumatic journey in which their ship was forced to lay over in Lisbon after being severely damaged during an attack by a French man-of-war. After attending the University of Pennsylvania, Leslie was apprenticed to a bookseller in 1808....
