Chalfant, Jefferson David (06 November 1856–03 February 1931), painter, was born in Sadsbury Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, the son of Franklin Chalfant, a cabinetmaker, and Lydia Nelson. He attended public schools in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. For a time he made a living by cabinetmaking, and he returned to cabinetmaking to support himself at various times throughout his life. By 1879 Chalfant had moved to Wilmington, Delaware, possibly at the urging of his sister, Aribell Bullock, who had married a Wilmington blacksmith....
