Illington, Margaret (23 July 1879–11 March 1934), actress, was born Maude Light in Bloomington, Illinois, the daughter of Israel H. Light, a horse dealer, and Ellen Mary Chamberlain. Determined from childhood to become an she attended Illinois Wesleyan University but completed her education with two years at Conway’s Dramatic School in Chicago, where she won a medal for her work in Shakespearean parts. She left Illinois for New York in 1900 with strong letters of recommendation, youth, beauty, charm, and a nature that a critic later described as both “vivacious” and “temperamental.” Also, she was frankly ambitious....
