Klein, Charles (07 January 1867–07 May 1915), librettist and playwright, was born in London, England, the son of Hermann Klein, a Russian immigrant, and Adelaide Soman. Although little is known of his childhood, he was a member of a family well versed in English art and culture. His brothers, Hermann, Manuel, and Alfred, were prominent as music critic, composer, and actor, respectively.
