Turner, Big Joe (18 May 1911–24 November 1985), blues singer, was born Joseph Vernon Turner, Jr., in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Joe Turner, a fisherman and hotel cook, and Georgia Harrington, who worked in a laundry after his father died when Turner was age three or four. He was generally known as Big Joe Turner on account of his substantial height and girth and should not be confused with the contemporary stride pianist Joe Turner....
