Tough, Dave (26 April 1907–09 December 1948), jazz drummer, was born David Jaffray Tough in Oak Park, Illinois, the son of James Tough, a banker and broker, and Hannah Bell Fullerton. He was also called Davy (or Davey) Tough. His birth year has appeared incorrectly as 1908 and his middle name as Jarvis. Tough’s mother died when he was nine years old, and his father married one of her sisters in 1921. He attended Oak Park High School but never graduated and instead spent three years at the Lewis Institute, a prep school where affluent families sent advanced or incorrigible youths.
