Hutto, J. B. (26 April 1926–12 June 1983), blues singer and guitarist, was born Joseph Benjamin Hutto in Elko, South Carolina, the son of Calvin Hutto and Susie Johnson, farmers. He spent his first three years on a farm but grew up primarily in Augusta, Georgia, where his family moved in 1929. Raised in a religious family, he and his siblings developed an early interest in spirituals, forming a family gospel group known as the Golden Crowns, which sang in two Augusta churches....
