Ray, Nicholas (07 August 1911–16 June 1979), film director, was born Raymond Nicholas Kienzle, Jr., in Galesville, Wisconsin, the son of Raymond Kienzle, a builder, and Lena Toppen. The family moved to La Crosse, Wisconsin, at the end of the First World War. Ray became interested in the theater at an early age.
